‘Wild Bill’ Hickok
(1837–76)a famous frontiersman in the American Wild West. His real name was James Butler Hickok. He worked as a marshal(= law officer) in several Kansas towns before joining Buffalo Bill’sWild West Show(1872–4). He then moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, where he was shot in the back and killed while playing cards.
